Women’s rights, reproductive freedom for all and healthcare access is important to me. Not just as a husband and father to 4 daughters but as a candidate who knows its right, just, and good for society.

I’ve been citing many reasons throughout this campaign why codifying reproductive rights into federal law is so important. Yesterday, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals gave us one more.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals just banned the mailing of mifepristone—the most common medication used for abortion and miscarriage care in America. If this ruling stands, or if the Supreme Court upholds it, it will affect every state—including Ohio.

This is judicial overreach into your home and your healthcare decisions. Courts are now second-guessing FDA medical decisions and restricting access to medication the agency has approved as safe with authorized mail delivery.

Women in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi already have zero abortion clinics. Now they can’t even get medication by mail from out-of-state doctors. Courts are forcing them to travel hundreds of miles or carry unwanted pregnancies to term, creating more inequality for those who have the means and those who don’t.

This is what happens when reproductive rights aren’t protected by federal law. The people of Ohio overwhelmingly voted to enshrine abortion rights in our state constitution, but our Republican state legislature is ignoring your vote. And we’ve already seen how quickly courts can strip away protections—Roe was settled law for 50 years until it wasn’t.

We need representatives in Congress who will codify reproductive rights and stop this judicial assault on reproductive freedom.
