Once again, the United States is in the midst of a government shutdown because the Senate and House of Representatives cannot get their act together and represent the people of their districts and states. In fact, Speaker Johnson has sent all Republicans home (likely to avoid swearing in the new Arizona representative, who will likely be the deciding vote to release the Epstein files). Democrats in the Senate are battling to try to restore tax credits for the Affordable Care Act, which provides health insurance to nearly 500,000 Ohioans.

The majority in the Senate is arguing that the tax credits can wait until after a temporary funding bill is passed. This is simply not true. The tax credits must be addressed now, because open enrollment is just around the corner. The loss of these tax credits will make insurance unaffordable for many people in our district and will drive up the already skyrocketing costs of health care. And Republicans know it.

While this is being debated and fought out in the Senate, the House is absent and so is Max Miller. As he has proved many times before, he goes missing in times of crisis for Ohioans. Even though his constituents are demanding it, he is still not holding open town hall meetings and is hiding from the people of his District. He is not building coalitions and working across the aisle to help the people who elected him – the people he is hired to represent. He was not hired by President Trump.

The shutdown is having real impacts on the people of the Ohio 7th Congressional district. Just a few examples are: closures of services at national parks resulting in the cancellation of events; travel disruptions around the country as the already over-stressed transportation system is further burdened; many federal employees are not being paid, but still must work under the threat of never receiving pay, and the lack of pay will negatively impact their credit ratings; and the veterans in our district will be further restricted in their access to the services and care they need.

Congress should still be in session. Even while waiting for the Senate to pass a temporary funding bill, there is other work to be done including proposed legislation to restore collective bargaining rights to federal employees, problems to fix in healthcare, unlawful tariffs being imposed unnecessarily upon the American people driving up our cost of living. Of course there is also the ongoing Epstein scandal and the demand from citizens for accountability.

We deserve representatives who will listen to and work for their constituents. We deserve representatives who will fight for the working people of Northeast Ohio, not for the preservation of their own power and wealth.

I am running for this congressional seat so I can help the people of our district have greater access to healthcare, the right to make healthcare decisions with their providers (and not made for them by either government or insurance executives), affordable cost of living, and improved public education without burdening the next generations with ever-increasing debt.
