STATEMENT CONDEMNING TRUMP’S RACIST ATTACK ON CHINESE AND INDIAN AMERICANS
Donald Trump just posted one of the most racist attacks I’ve ever seen from an American president.
In a rambling, venomous post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Chinese and Indian immigrants “aren’t loyal to this country,” suggested they come here only to “drop a baby in the ninth month” and exploit birthright citizenship, called them criminals who work to destroy America, and accused them of turning the United States into a “cesspool.”
This is vile racism. This is xenophobia. This is hate speech from the President of the United States.
Chinese Americans and Indian Americans ARE Americans. They are doctors saving lives in our hospitals. They are engineers building our infrastructure. They are teachers educating our children. They are small business owners creating jobs. They are scientists advancing our knowledge. Many serve in our military, defending the very Constitution Trump attacks daily.
They don’t need to prove their loyalty to anyone—least of all to a president who incited an insurrection against our democracy.
Trump’s attack isn’t just morally repugnant—it’s dangerous. This kind of rhetoric fuels hate crimes. During COVID, anti-Asian hate crimes spiked 339%. Trump’s words have consequences, and those consequences are violence against innocent people.
The 14th Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship to anyone born on American soil. This isn’t a loophole. This isn’t something to “abuse.” This is our Constitution—ratified in 1868 to ensure that all persons born in the United States are citizens. Trump claims it was “meant for children of slaves” and doesn’t apply to immigrants. That’s a lie. The framers of the 14th Amendment explicitly rejected proposals to limit it only to certain groups. Birthright citizenship is fundamental to American democracy.
Trump calls this constitutional guarantee something that turns America into a “cesspool.” I’ll tell you what actually degrades our nation: A president who spews racist hatred. A president who questions the loyalty of American citizens based on their ethnicity. A president who attacks the ACLU for defending constitutional rights. A president who scapegoats immigrant communities to distract from his own failures.
This isn’t about immigration policy. This is about racism, pure and simple.
Trump is distracting from his record: An unauthorized war with Iran that 63% of Americans oppose. An economy where costs are skyrocketing. An administration mired in corruption. Approval ratings in free fall.
So he does what racists always do: He blames immigrants. He questions the loyalty of Americans who don’t look like him. He attacks the constitutional rights that protect us all.
This cannot stand.
To every Chinese American and Indian American in Ohio’s 7th District and across this country:
You belong here. Your contributions make America stronger. Your loyalty is not in question. And I will fight for you in Congress without hesitation.
This is not who we are as Americans. We are a nation built by immigrants from every corner of the world. Our diversity is our strength, not our weakness. And we will not allow a racist president to divide us.
Trump’s America is one of hate, fear, and division—where some Americans are considered “real” and others are forever suspect.
The America I’m fighting for is one of dignity, equality, and justice for all—where every American is valued regardless of where they or their ancestors were born.
Trump’s racist hatred will not define us. We are better than this.
